Since its inception in
the early 1970s, The Federation of Indian Publishers has distinguished
itself in encouraging the rapid upgrading of book production in the country by involving
publishers in seminars, workshops and training courses at national and international
levels. Its Research and Development circulars have brought publishes and prospective
buyers together and have kept publishers abreast with the latest technical and marketing
developments; in a similar fashion, the FIP Newsletter, at regular intervals, updates its
members about whats what and whos who and whos doing what in the field
of publishing and related areas. The Federation organised
National Conventions of Indian Language Publishers in 1993, 1995, 1999 and 2000 with view
to bringing together publishers of Indian languages on one platform.
The Federation has also been organising the Delhi Book
Fair since 1995 which provides a big opportunity to Indian publishers to expose
their books to a vast number of readers. Delhi Book Fair has since established itself as
an annual cultural event in the history of Delhi and showcases the progress made by Indian
publishing over the years.
The Federation effectively serves the cause of Indian publishing
by sponsoring and supporting proposals and projects and benefit the publishing industry
and the market it serves in India. This is does by acting as an interface for the
publishing industry with the ministries of Human Resource Development, Finance,
Commerce, Defence, the National Book Trust and other Government Departments and
agencies.
The Federations advice cooperation and assistance on all
matters of mutual assistance has invariably been sought by the Ministry of Human
Resource Development, The National Book Trust, and other organisations and
agencies in India and abroad concerned with the publishing industry, promotion of books,
and cause of education and literacy in general.
The Federation promotes interaction between Indian and foreign
publishers to enable them to enlarge and exploit areas of mutually profitable cooperation.
Delegations of the Federation have, in recent years, represented the country in China,
France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and countries of the erstwhile USSR.
Two Federation has a Scheme to give Award for Excellence in Book
Production which is applicable to all publishes both in the private and public sector. The
Federation has also instituted the Distinguished Publishers Award and Distinguished Women
Publishers Award for selected women publishers which are the most coveted awards for the
publishers. All these Awards are Industrys benckmarks in assessing national book
production standards. The Federation also gives Freedom to Publish Award to a publisher
annually, who shows courage to publish controversial books without fear of the wrath of
the fundamentalists or any action by the state. And now the Federation has also instituted
the Young Publishers Award, the Award for Distinguished Editors and Designers and the
Award for Distinguished Translators.
The Federation has expanded its activities and opened three
separate Divisions (i) Export Marketing Council; (ii) Copyright Council and Copyright
Centre; and (iii) Educational Publishing Council.
The main objective of the Export Marketing Council is to encourage
Indian Publishers to develop their book business abroad. The Copyright Council organises
Copyright Seminars and Copyright Refresher Courses in various parts of the country to
create awareness about Copyright and to stress Indias deep commitment in Copyright
protection and anti-piracy. The Copyright Centre acts as the clearing house for giving
information about the various formalities required for exchange of translation and reprint
rights and encourage Indian publishers in the exchange of translation rights both
nationally and internationally. The Educational Publishing Council looks after all aspects
of education publishing and promotion of educational books.
The Federation brings out a journal, the Indian Book
Industry, which is a bi-monthly journal devoted to the development of
publishing.
